Most Business Owners Get the Wrong Accountant

A bookkeeper processes the past. A Chartered Accountant protects your future. There is a difference — and it is the difference between a business that grows with confidence and one that is always scrambling to catch up with HMRC.

Missed Deadlines & Penalties

HMRC interest and late filing penalties add up fast. A Chartered Accountant keeps you compliant before it becomes a problem.

Overpaying Tax

R&D credits, SEIS/EIS reliefs, allowances — most founders leave thousands on the table every year through poor tax planning.

Failed Fundraising & Loan Applications

Investors and banks want professional-grade financials. Scrappy accounts cost you the capital your business needs to scale.

Common Questions

In the UK, the title “accountant” is not protected — anyone can call themselves one. A Chartered Accountant (ACA or FCA) has completed a rigorous three-year training programme, passed 15 professional examinations and is regulated by ICAEW. That means professional indemnity insurance, a code of ethics and the ability to be held to account. For any serious business matter — tax investigations, investor-facing accounts, grant certifications or SEIS compliance — only a Chartered Accountant carries the necessary professional standing.

Our fees depend on the services required and the complexity of your business. We offer fixed-fee engagements so there are no surprise invoices. Annual accounts and corporation tax for a straightforward limited company typically start from £1,200 plus VAT. SEIS/EIS advance assurance applications and grant financial certifications are priced per engagement. Book a free call and we will give you a clear quote within 24 hours.

Yes — many early-stage companies use both schemes in sequence or simultaneously, depending on their investor mix and funding stage. SEIS applies to very early-stage investments (up to £250k raised), while EIS covers larger raises (up to £5m per year). We manage the full process including advance assurance applications, compliance statements and investor certificates for both schemes.

Most Innovate UK and UKRI grant applications require financial schedules, forecasts and — at the claims stage — an accountant’s certificate confirming the eligible costs. While Innovate UK does not legally require the accountant to be Chartered, grant panels treat professionally prepared financials very differently to those produced by a bookkeeper or director. A Chartered Accountant’s involvement significantly increases credibility and reduces the risk of a claim being challenged or clawed back.

Absolutely. We work with business owners across the UK — from Edinburgh to Exeter, Manchester to Bristol. The vast majority of our work is conducted remotely via secure cloud platforms and video calls. Where a face-to-face meeting is required for complex matters, we can arrange visits or meet at our London office at 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden.
